Hackle/peacock rope...

Wrap the hackle around the herl rope with the shiny side towards the hook. This will lay down the barbs a little closer to the herl, giving them an angle kind of like their original angle on the hackle feather (pic 1). Since this peacock/hackle combo will have barbs pointing "all around the clock" (pic 2), all barbs will obviously not point straight out from the hook. But laying them down like this, will at least make the "V" shape of the hackle wraps narrower.

This kind of hackle gives a new meaning to the word 'bushy' and it won't make the fly score high in a beauty contest. But in the durability contest... oh yeah! ;o)
